Animal: Cervus canadensis (elk)

This is a Cervus canadensis (elk) femur that was fed to a Crocuta crocuta (spotted hyena), named Scruffy, at the Milwaukee County Zoo in 2012 as part of Dr. Yezzi-Woodley’s dissertation research. The femur was purchased from Scott Salonek with the Elk Marketing Council. The femur was largely de-fleshed and the bone was frozen at time of purchase. The bone was completely thawed prior to the feeding experiment and was checked for any saw damage (there was none). The femur was then fed to Scruffy. The fragments that were left behind were collected and brought back to the University of Minnesota where they were cleaned at low heat in a crockpot.
